Eggs and coffee are undeniably two of the most consumed breakfast items worldwide. But have you ever considered combining these two classic staples to create a delicious and nutritious meal?

Yes, you heard it right! The combination of egg and coffee may sound unusual. However, it can make for a surprisingly satisfying breakfast.

In this blog, we’ll introduce you to some unique and tasty egg in coffee recipes you can easily prepare at home. So, if you’re up for trying something new and exciting, read on!

Why would you put an egg in coffee?

Adding egg aids clarify the coffee, letting the grounds separate from the water easily. The egg white extracts the bitterness from the grounds and enhances the caffeine. This results in a clear java with no acidity or bitterness and a velvety texture that is easy to drink.

Combining eggs and coffee is not new; many people have enjoyed egg coffee for years. Many still enjoy it, which is delicious when prepared correctly. The above are tried-and-tested recipes we urge you to try. We are certain you will crave this new form of coffee after one well-brewed experiment.

Is it healthy to add an egg to your coffee?

Sure, it is! Whisking a raw egg into your coffee is healthy and delicious, especially if you are physically active. Coffee has been proven to give a performance boost, whether physical or mental, and eggs make your brew incredibly smooth and rich while also providing nutritional value — they contain plenty of protein, minerals, and vitamins. Not forgetting it aids in digestion.

Will cracking an egg into coffee compromise the taste?

It is possible to end up with a horrible brew if you pair the two wrongly, which is why we have wrapped up these tried and tested recipes.

Vietnamese egg coffee (ca phe trung)

Vietnamese egg coffee, also known as ca phe trung, is a popular and unique twist on traditional coffee. Made by whipping together egg yolks and sweetened condensed milk, the resulting frothy cream is spooned on top of a strong cup of Vietnamese coffee.

This delicious drink is a staple in Vietnam and has begun to gain popularity worldwide.

Vietnam’s most popular coffee brands are ideal for this recipe. You need a Vietnamese coffee filter – phin – to make this brew. If you don’t have one, you can use coffee made in a French Press, a strong pour-over brew, or espresso. By all means, avoid using instant coffee.

Here is how to make real Vietnamese egg coffee.

What you need:

  • 3 cups hot water (195 – 205 °F)
  • 2tbsp Vietnamese coffee (if that’s not possible, dark roast coffee beans is your next best bet)
  • 1tbsp sugar (vanilla sugar if available)
  • 1–3tbsp condensed milk
  • 2 egg yolks

Steps:

  • Make Vietnamese coffee with a phin placed over each coffee cup. Let drip for 4 – 5 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, beat eggs with sugar till soft peaks form.
  • Fold in condensed milk carefully to preserve the egg-sugar foam.
  • With coffee in the bottom of the cup, spoon the egg mixture cautiously over the coffee.
  • Dust with cocoa powder or cinnamon if desired.

Scandinavian-Style Coffee Brewed With Egg (Sweden)

This traditional Scandinavian-style coffee is nicknamed “Church Basement Coffee” in the States because it was traditionally served at Sunday gatherings. It is still popular in Midwestern church gatherings, and before it is brewed, egg and coffee are first paired.

The egg is added to make the coffee grounds sink to the bottom of the pot. The result is a smooth, light, and mild cup of java.

Some say this recipe was invented to salvage low-quality coffee grounds when pricey coffee grounds were recycled numerous times or the brewing methods were crude and over-extracting. You will be thrilled to learn how this recipe came to be.

What you need:

  • 300ml cold water
  • One egg (do the right thing, use free-range organic)
  • 400ml boiling water
  • 20g of coarsely ground coffee

Steps:

  • Break one egg. Pour it into a bowl with ground coffee and 1/4 cup of cold water and mix until smooth.
  • Pour the egg-coffee mixture into 400g of boiling water in a coffee pot and simmer for 3-5 minutes.
  • After boiling the coffee, pour 100g of cold water and let it settle for 2 more minutes.
  • Remove any visible coffee particles from the surface.
  • Strain the coffee through a fine-mesh sieve to reduce the grounds in your cup.
  • Serve hot or iced.
  • Enjoy!

Egg Brandy Coffee (Sri Lanka)

This recipe pairs raw egg, brandy, and coffee into one mouth-watering drink. If you are not an enthusiast of brandy, feel free to experiment with different types of alcohol. Some say this brew strengthens and helps one get through colds and other ailments.  You can also prepare it as a pick-me-up after a long day at work!

What you need:

  • A cup of coffee – brewed the way you like it
  • A shot of brandy
  • 3 cubes of sugar
  • One egg

Steps:

  • Beat the whole egg in a bowl until smooth.
  • Prepare your coffee and add 3 cubes of sugar.
  • While beating consistently, pour the freshly brewed hot coffee into the egg.
  • Add the shot of brandy.
  • Drink while it is almost scaldingly hot to provide maximum strength and stamina.

Primal Egg Yolk Coffee

Mark will prove why this coffee is delicious and healthy; further information is here. He recommends using pastured (free-range) egg yolks.

The best thing about this coffee is that you can experiment with different ingredients for a more comforting outcome.

For example, you can add butter or coconut oil at the blending stage to ensure they emulsify and aren’t stuck at the top of your cup. If you add powdered spices like turmeric or cinnamon, sprinkle them on the top of your cup at the end.

What you need:

  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1 large mug (350 ml) of filtered black coffee (NOTE: Pod coffee just does not cut it)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3 egg yolks (use organic free-range eggs if possible)
  • A few optional extra ingredients for taste: Turmeric, Ground cinnamon, Vanilla essence, coconut oil, and Butter.

Steps:

  • Blend the coffee and egg yolks for 3 minutes.
  • Add a teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt.
  • Blend for a few seconds more.
  • Server and enjoy!

Kopi Telur (Indonesia)

This Padang-style coffee with egg is a traditional recipe from Sumatra, Indonesia. It offers a tasteful caffeine kick on a hot afternoon.

It is recommended to use Sumatran coffee, but if you can’t find it, it is ok to use any dark coffee low in acidity.

What you need:

  • A tablespoon of condensed milk
  • Half a cup of strongly brewed coffee
  • One egg yolk
  • 1.5 teaspoons of honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Brew your coffee.
  • Mix vanilla extract, honey, and egg yolk in a tall glass.
  • Pour 1/4 cup of boiling water into the glass while beating slowly with a thin whisk. Keep whisking until the mixture becomes smooth and foam-like.
  • Add condensed milk to the center of the foamy mixture.
  • Now add the brewed java into the center of the milk.
  • This should end up with a three-layered glass: the “custard” of honey, vanilla, and egg in the bottom; coffee in the middle; and foam at the top.
  • Enjoy!

All the best!
