Reasons why you should use Espresso beans

The majority of coffee beans are either Robusta or Arabica. This is true for any form of coffee beverage you make, including espresso.

The espresso bean is just a coffee bean that has been roasted to a higher temperature, ground finer, and brewed in an espresso machine or Aeropress.

There are many reasons why a lot of cafes uses Espresso beans in their brews and not just regular coffee beans, there are many opinions on the subject but  here are the main reasons why:

The roasting process

This is the beginning and the end of coffee brewing. This is where the difference in tasting,. Flavor and the choice of brewing method comes into play.

A rule of thumb is that lighter roasts work best with a slower extraction method which will have the particle to slow down the flow of water through the coffee giving it more time to concentrate the flavor of the beans and the smaller particles will have more surface area exposed making it easier for the water to enter the coffee.

Darker roasts on the other hand goes for a much quicker extraction method such as espresso. In retrospect regular coffee beans are amazing for different brewing techniques and methods but espresso beans are best for high pressure methods for much stronger taste.

Although it is with this “stronger” taste that espresso’s has attracted such a large following. A lot of its consumers have come to expect a certain espresso “flavor” that you don’t get in any other coffee brew.

Better with milk

Latte and cappuccino are often associated with espresso but the thing is that if you add milf to an espresso, it’s no longer an espresso but if your espresso is too bitter for you then we recommend that you add a bit of sugar to balance the taste but don’t add too much or you’ll overshadow the distinct espresso flavor.

But if you do add a mixture of milk then you’ll get a ltte  which has a much milky and creamy flavor. This is because the drink is mostly steamed milk. This type of espresso is very popular in the United States and is a common best seller in most cafes where they often put syrups or other sweeteners to add to the flavor.

It’s cheaper

Coffee beans that are grown in one region or better known as single origin coffee are a bit pricey for most so for economic reasons it makes sense that most cafes use more espresso beans in their café’s. These cheap beans are usually from countries like Brazil but still retain that distinct taste of quality in every sip. In some cases it might not be %100 pure but that’s a choice.

Understanding organic coffee

Coffee is a common commodity in the international market. It is an internationally known beverage and no single country simply “doesn’t have coffee” it is either made in another form or style that makes every place in the world have their unique brew but what really goes on in that bag of “organic” coffee? What does it really mean for it to be organic?

What does “organic coffee” mean?

Organic coffee means coffee that is grown under all-around agricultural production management system to ensure safe and quality coffee beans but if you really want a coffee that’s truly organic then I recommend that you research a little bit more about where your coffee comes from as different nations have different standards and regulations on what it means to be “organic”.

Some countries only care about how a crop is taken care of and not the soil that it’s planted on, this means that it can be mixed in with many chemicals that can affect the state of the product as there can be small amounts of pesticides in it. Although some also need the soil to be completely natural for 5 years to make sure that it is completely ridden of any chemicals, although most coffee from these types of countries are more pricey than others, it is due to the lengthy process of ensuring 100% organic farming.

In this case you must also consider pesticides. Most companies grow their coffee in the sun to maximize production, this leaves the crop to be more prone to insects and diseases and they have to resort to some sort of method –that is usually chemical- to control this. But some companies like Java Planet grow their coffees in the shade, this minimizes pests so it naturally, it lessen the use of pesticides but this leads to lower production that inflates its price.

Organic roasting

Coffee must be roasted with a roaster that is never used to roast anything that isn’t organic beans. This lessens the possibility of contamination between the products and ensures that it stays to its natural origins of 0% chemical content. This is an industry standard to all organic coffee producers according to the NCA (National Coffee Association).

Processing

To be 100% organic, all of the small details matter. In the roasting process be careful because they might add chemicals in the process, this includes the bags in which they are shipped in and the handling itself.

There’s also the processing to take into consideration. The coffee bean is inside many layers: silver skin, parchment, pectin, pulp, and outer skin, then you get to the actual coffee. There are 2 primary methods to process the coffee and extract the bean: wet process and dry process.

The dry processes are coffees that are dried with the cherry and the wet processes are coffees that are dried without the cherry. Comparing these two, Naturals tend to have more fruit and flavor because the bean has more time to interact with the natural sugars as the enzymes break down the mucilage around the bean.

That being said, dry processing is much simpler and easier when processing organic beans, that’s why dry-processed coffee is much cheaper than natural processed coffee.

The beans are hand picked and then fermented for 26 hours so the skin can be carefully removed without damaging the seed. No chemicals are used.

The process is very interesting too, as they’ve said on their official website;

“Your beans are spring water washed, then slowly sun dried until they have the perfect humidity content of 11.5%. Finally, your beans transition into a 30-day “rest” period, which allows the beans to slowly complete their taste-enhancing richness.“

This coffee is from Nicaragua.

Kicking Horse Cliff Hanger Espresso is a coffee company that started business 25 years ago in a garage out in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, it is currently owned –as it has always been- by its CEO Elana Rosenfield.

Is having a picturesque view of the mountains in the postcard perfect sceneries of Canada your standards in choosing a brew? Then this might be perfect for you. Roasted in the Rocky Mountains and delivered straight to your doorstep, it is no doubt that this coffee won’t disappoint people who are looking for something unique.

Death Wish Organic Coffee is infamous for claiming to be the “world’s strongest coffee” and being the coffee that was given to NASA astronauts, while it does look very intimidating with its dark design the actual strength of the coffee relies on your method of brewing.

With that aside, in its “true” form, this is definitely one of the strongest brews out there. It’s dark roasted which is immediately connected to being stronger taste, and strong it definitely is! It’s actually a lesser known fact that strong beers have the least caffeine, this blend uses Robusta beans rather than Arabica as it allows it to have that extra “kick”.

The dark roast tastes to stand out. If you’re into roasts that taste a lot like a much darker, more concentrated type of espresso, having the energy to get you through a busy day then you might want to try this one.

Organic Mammoth Espresso

This is coffee from Mt. Whitney Coffee Roasters. It gives out a rich dark and nutty flavor with a hint of lemon. As weird as that might sound for those who haven’t tried it yet it is a surprisingly good blend.

It is wet processed, grown at 1400 meters in the mountains that makes the growing process slower so the plant can process all of that flavor much better. It’s USDA certified organic coffee so you don’t have to worry about the chemicals and such.

It is a small batch artisan roast with 100% Arabica coffee and is tested by a skilled team of coffee tasters supervised by a certified Q grader. This coffee is one of the best out there, so the only advice that I can give you is to try it.

Cafe Altura Whole Bean Organic Coffee, Espresso Roast, 4 Pound (Packaging May Vary)
  • Tasty Arabica beans ideal for espresso and cappuccino brewing
  • Delicious iced or hot
  • Perfect way to start your morning
  • Great for a quick treat or pick-me-up any time of day or night
  • Organic

Café Altura, which was started in 1980 when its founder Chris Shepherd traveled to Chiapas, Mexico, is searching for coffee grown without the use of harmful chemicals. Even in its beginning being organic is in the lifeblood of Café Altura.

That being said, the process that café Altura does to reach its flavor is due to the fact that its shade is grown, which is a huge upside because shade grown coffee usually has more flavor than your normal coffee because the process is how nature intended it to be. This is a fun little detail that ensures quality in every sip from your cup.

It is a dark roast that should give it that very concentrated taste like the traditional espresso from this blend although the taste might be a bit too normal for some, this is still a very good coffee if you just want to taste the good old espresso and aren’t in the mood for anything adventurous.

  • GMO free
  • 100% Arabica beans

  • Fair Trade - USDA Certified Organic - Single Origin - High Altitude. If We Could Make This Coffee Any Healthier We Would! Medium Roast. Also Comes With Free Special Report Called "How To Make The Healthiest Cup Of Coffee"
  • Healthy Coffee Rule #1) Always Go Organic. Why? Because conventional coffee is one of the most heavily treated crops. One of the many health risks is that they can act as "xenoestrogens" in your body disrupting balance for both men and women.
  • Healthy Coffee Rule #2) Coffee Grown At High Altitude Is Better. Why? Because the higher the altitude the coffee is grown at, the denser the bean. You may have heard the term "Strictly Hard Bean" (SHB) which denotes an especially dense, high-altitude coffee. This Peak Performance Organic Coffee grown in the Guatemalan Highlands is a perfect example of this. This higher elevation bean is more dense and thus of a higher quality grade. High Altitude Coffee also tends to have more antioxidants!
  • Healthy Coffee Rule #3) Single Origin Coffee Is Better. Why? Because while "Blended" Coffee like a "Breakfast Blend" might sound cool... there's a much higher likelihood that at least one of the bean varieties that went into that blend was contaminated meaning the entire batch is now contaminated.

  • CRAFTED FOR ESPRESSO - Whole Bean coffee optimized for espresso to give you a delicious coffee that cuts through
  • BREW YOUR WAY - Brew your espresso how you would like. Add more water for a less strong espresso or less water for a stronger beverage
  • 100% ORGANIC - USDA Organic, ethically sourced coffee from Guatemala and Ethiopia

  • BIZZY COFFEE FOR BUSY PEOPLE - Mastering the espresso craft, Bizzy Coffee will give you the highest quality espresso at a great price

Bizzy Organic Espresso is best served in cold brew. They use the first micro-sifted coarse ground coffee optimized for this kind of brewing for an extra smooth cold brew, although with this, it’s already a great product the best part is that you can brew your cold brew in whatever way you’d like, so if you want a less stronger coffee then you can add more water, you want more milk? Then more milk it is, you want it to be stronger? Then stronger it shall. It’s this flexibility that makes this brew perfect for most café settings as it can suit the tastes of the customer better.

Just like everything else in this list, this coffee is also 100% organic, USDA certified and it is ethically sourced from Guatemala, Peru and Nicaragua so you don’t have to think of all the unfairly treated farmers, and factory workers living on pennies first thing in the morning as you drink your coffee.

This blend is roasted from medium to dark but it’s not just pure bitterness that you will be tasting as it is balanced with notes of chocolate, berries and brown sugar. It is also worth noting that brown sugar is better than white sugar because –although it isn’t used that much in cafes but is still amazing for personal use-  is because it is less processed and stays nearer to its original form, It is therefore more healthier compared to white sugar.

Benefits of Drinking Organic Coffee

One of the many reasons why organic coffee has such a huge following worldwide is due to some very good reasons, here are a few.

Environmentally friendly

In order to meet demands for the increasingly profitable, opportunistic and overly crowded, and I mean really crowded, so much that they need to think of a new way to produce more, in a short amount of time.

This can be rooted to the growing industrialization in the world, the rapid changes brought by globalization and the fast spike in population growth, in return this created a large necessity for coffee to the point that it becomes a commodity. It became an international industry that has brought hundreds of thousands of jobs to impoverished countries and brought unprecedented growth to such countries.

On the downside, companies have resorted to using chemical fertilizers to feed the plant, and speed up the cycle of the crop so that they don’t have to rotate them anymore. This speeds up the process, at the cost of adding chemicals and GMOs to the crop. Oftentimes, they grow the crop in the sun so that it grows faster compared to the traditional shade growing which is much slower. Of course, growing a crop out in the sun results in many insects and diseases clinging to the plant. This results in heavy use of pesticide, insecticides and other chemicals.

Choosing to purchase organic coffee helps to lessen the negative effects of it in your body that might result in some serious complications later on in life. Additionally organic farming reduces the chemicals, pesticides, and artificial fertilizers that can harm the nearby communities and farmers who are regularly exposed to them, ensuring not only your safety but for the people who make your coffee as well.

Health benefits

There’s nothing bad in having a good cup of coffee all while having the assurance that you will be healthier in the long term. It doesn’t have that feeling of guilt that you have when drinking other beverages like juices or sodas. This is especially true in organic coffee, some of these benefits are:

  • Can improve energy levels and make you more tolerant to stress.
  • Can help burn fat because it makes you less hungry in times that you don’t actually have to eat when in reality, you’re just craving.
  • Can improve the functions of your nervous system.
  • Contains essential nutrients like vitamin B2, vitamin B5, Manganese, Potassium, vitamin B3.
  • Lowered risk of diabetes.
  • Can fight depression and increase dopamine levels.
  • High in antioxidants and boosts the immune system against diseases.
  • Can provide a natural energy boost.

Agricultural benefits

Organic coffee will benefit from the chemical free nutrients that they absorb from the soil, while this is a slow process, it enhances the flavor and creates an inimitable aroma that chemically grown coffee can’t reproduce.

It’s also typical of organic farmers to be associated with fair trade programs which can help coffee producers in 3rd world countries to maintain and develop a sustainable livelihood.

Is organic coffee healthier than regular coffee?:

Many people believe that organic coffee beans automatically means healthier than foods grown or processed through standard methods. This mentality applies not just to coffee but to vegetables and fruits as well as livestock. To tell the truth, most people believe that any organic food that is organically produced are healthier alternatives to regularly processed food but the fact is that even though you consume less chemicals the nutritional value stays the same.

Science says that they were unable to confirm that organic products are inherently healthier than regular foods. They claim that both organic and regular foods share the same quality and quantity of vitamins, minerals and so on.

Nutritionally speaking organic coffee isn’t necessarily any healthier than regular coffee although there are healthier alternatives on both sides of the spectrum. Although if you are an avid coffee drinker who prefers something that’s limited in GMO’s and other man-made chemicals, going organic is a good step.

Which coffee is better for the planet? Things you should consider when buying organic espresso beans

When answering this question you must take into consideration the company that you’re buying from, where they get their supply, how they get it, how it’s processed, how it’s roasted, and everything else in between. Although organic coffee farms limit their chemical usages in raising their crop this doesn’t necessarily assure that they use eco-friendly methods of farming.

Sustainability is a big word, both for farming and as well as the entire world as an entire generation is being environmentally conscious as well as the rapid growth of the “green new deal movement”, Bill Gates is even endorsing the idea of sustainable energy, one can say that sustainability is the big goal of the 21st century so it is only normal for the coffee industry to follow these steps.

In reality, sustainable farming is not that widespread among plantations across the world, the same thing goes to all types of plantations like vegetable plantations and fruit plantations as it is very time consuming, expensive and is economically unreasonable.

On the other hand, organic coffee producers that receive certification from Fairtrade international to engage in stricter regulations to have more environmentally friendly methods, to be more sustainable, and have more fair practices than a normal organic farm does.

But if you really want to purchase environmentally friendly coffee then I suggest that you do a very thorough research on the company that you’re buying from and research on organic coffee growers and roasters so you can have a better option on your purchases.

Growing methods

Some well known coffee growing countries include:

  • Brazil
  • Ethiopia
  • Kenya
  • Sumatra
  • Colombia
  • Guatemala
  • Nicaragua
  • Indonesia

Just like the fine things in life, coffee beans grown in different regions have specific flavors and characteristics associated with their origin, that’s why some coffee aficionados prefer to have their coffee from a single-origin because it adds to the taste and overall flavor of a cup of coffee.

The methodologies and techniques that these countries use is also a factor that affects the overall end product, this includes the cultivation of the crop, the growing methods –whether its sun grown or shade grown- and the processing. All of these little details are what makes a bag of beans “special” in its own way.

Species and variety of coffee

Something that is usually overlooked but is an essential step to picking your perfect brew is knowing the type of species it is. Usually as long as it’s Arabica beans people would automatically think that it’s all that they need since most high quality coffee companies use Arabica but there are actually 2 kinds of bean trees which is essential to add to the overall taste of the product namely, these are:

  • Robusta (Coffea Canephora) They have a high yield, are usually pest resistant and grow well in warm, low altitude environments.
  • Arabica (Coffee Arabica) – They are very fragile and is susceptible to diseases, they require a high altitude and cold climate and yield less per harvest. This is the reason why Arabica is more expensive that Robusta and is only used for the top quality of beans, although there is nothing wrong with indulging in Robusta trees as they offer quality taste in the right hands and costs much less.

In the brew, Robusta produces more body and more cream than Arabica beans but has a very  crude flavor which does not go down very smoothly, you can taste this in your usual Nescafe coffee cup. Robustas is primarily used to produce commercial and readily available coffee due to its high yield production and low costs of upkeep.

Arabica on the other hand are generally finer types of beans. Most A grade coffee companies only roasts Arabica like the companies that we listed earlier.

Harvesting

The harvest method is important to the quality of the beans when they reach your cup. Beans are harvested once per year, usually over a 2-3 month period. There are 4 main harvesting methods:

1.) Stripping method- This is done by hand by hand removing all the parts, including the flowers and is usually manually done. It produces poor results because of the mixing of the good cherries with the damaged and the poor one, because of this there is no consistency in every bag of beans.

2.) Brushing the trees-  This method uses a type of comb to remove only the ripe cherries from the tree. This is only used in specialized farms which have low yield per season and is usually rare in terms of numbers because it is a time consuming process that can take some time before finishing an entire batch.

3.) Mechanical harvesting- Either a machine, a truck, or some sort of vibrator that is fixed to the tree is used to automatically loosen the ripe cherries making it a faster process to finish an entire batch.

But however good this might sound there is a bit of a downside to the producers as it might damage the tree and might damage the future crop in the process as it rips off the unripe cherries, damages the flowers and the leaves as well.

4.) Hand picking- This is the most exclusive method of all as hand picking has to be done manually for all of the crops in hectares of land that usually spans horizons but this usually produces a higher quality of beans since the farmers can see the ripe bean from the unripe one, not damage the leaves, the cherries, the flowers, and the leaves in the process. This has to be done until all of the cherries in the season are harvested.

The higher quality beans are usually picked in the slower methods as they result in higher quality beans that are manually selected.

Packaging

Not all packaging is the same. Coffee sold in a vacuum-sealed pack that enables air to escape (but not enter) will taste fresh. Some beans in an old wet sack most likely will not. The most authentic packaging isn’t this dramatic, but it definitely affect the quality of your coffee.

While sealing the flavor is the priority, sustainability should also play a huge role in choosing the right espresso bean.

Keep things like these in mind if you’re seeking for the greatest espresso coffee beans. A fine mix of coffee might be ruined before it even reaches your house due to poor packaging. You should seek for coffee packing that will keep the coffee fresh. Apply the same requirements to the packing that you would to the storage of your own coffee.

Once you’ve brewed the coffee, keeping it fresh and strong in between cups is critical. It must be kept away from air, moisture, and direct light. All of these factors can cause your coffee to go sour faster than it should.

Why is my espresso too acidic?

Acidity is a topic that many people overlook since their stomachs can handle a good amount of acidity before they feel any effects but for some people this is an important topic. Like my mother, some people might experience unusual stomach ache and nausea after drinking a cup of coffee due to their lower acidity tolerance.

So why are some coffee more acidic than others? In order to answer that question we must answer first, what exactly is acidity?

Acid is a chemical that gives off hydrogen ions in water, this means that the more acid you consume –like vinegar and citrus- depending on its level, you might experience some type of “rumbling” in your stomach which might not be a very good sign.

But what does it mean for a coffee to be “acidic”? Is it important in coffee? If it’s bad then why not just take it away entirely?

Well, acid can greatly affect the taste and aroma of the coffee, a copper can taste the acidity of a cup of coffee by the sharpness of the coffee leaves in one’s mouth but it is the fact that acid is a chemical that affects it in the sense of taste. This just proves that coffee-making is part science, part art, and understanding this can help coffee makers to get the best possible flavors.

Acidity in itself can make or break a coffee, it can add to its aroma or make it smell like rotten flesh, it can make it taste like heaven or taste like sewer water, it is an important step to the brewing process and anyone who is looking to make coffee making their profession should learn it because although it might sound hard –chemistry is one of the hardest sciences out there- it will benefit you in the long run.

The roast

Roasting a coffee for a longer period of time causes more decomposition of the beneficial chlorogenic acids that give lighter roasts their acidity. An espresso roast will be less acidic than a light or medium roast.

Under-extraction and Over-extraction

A sour espresso shot is one that has been under-extracted, which means that the water has been rushed through the coffee and has not extracted the great taste oils. You’re either not putting enough coffee in your basket, or you’re tamping too lightly, resulting in gritty coffee.

Over-extraction causes the coffee to become overcooked, releasing undesirable flavors; it becomes harsh, bitter, and burnt.

Temperature

One of the most prevalent causes of sour espresso is that it was pulled at a very low temperature. Pulling a shot at a low temperature results in under extraction since the cold water molecules aren’t active enough to complete the extraction. As a result, you get a sour and acidic taste.

What’s the difference between whole beans and ground beans?

Although this might sound very trivial to some, it is an important factor on the side of the consumer as it can affect the way that your coffee tastes and now you can change the way that it tastes.

So should you buy whole beans or ground coffee? The answer is simple, whole beans! Why? Well it’s because it’s more flavorful and produces that “fresh” quality that everyone wants in their cup. This is because ground beans lose their fragrance in the process of grinding whereas the whole beans remain in the “purest” form possible before the grind.

It has the fragrance, the aroma, the taste and the originality of the taste that stays true to when it’s freshly picked. It lets you taste the coffee in its finest form.

But the grinding process can be a bit tiring, and time consuming for some, so what about the person who prefers convenience? The busy man who needs his cup of coffee ASAP.

Well, worry not because ground coffee is perfect for you and there is no shame in drinking that as not everyone wants a complex experience in every cup but just wants to drink their coffee to get through the day.

Although one must remember that when you’re buying ground coffee you’re losing some of the charms of whole beans but that’s fine because you save yourself some valuable time that you can use to do some more important things other than spending 30 mins in the grinder, first thing in the morning.

If you do prefer the quick way then I have some advice for you to get the best possible taste out of your blend, these are:

  • Buy a week’s worth of ground beans every time so they don’t stock up in your drawer and end up losing their flavor and taste stale.
  • Store it in a good place with nothing around it so it can’t be contaminated.

Grinding tips

If you want to get the most out of your coffee in the best way possible then you might want to invest in a quality grinder. You need a grinder that grinds evenly so you don’t lose that flavor, that aroma, and more importantly, so you don’t have whole pieces floating around your drink.

If you ever want to grind your beans yourself then I recommend that you get a mill grinder. This grinds the coffee in an even way and ensures that you get the best flavor in the best way possible. Uniformity is an essential factor in coffee making.

Should espresso be dark or roasted?

Yes, espresso should be at least a bit darker than your regular cup of coffee. That is how it’s always been and that’s how most people prefer it. It has that distinct taste that you will only find in this type of brew. No wonder it has been a standard in almost all cafes for hundreds of years.

My suggestion for you, if you just want to experience the usual and not go for anything too adventurous and complicated, you can go with a medium-dark roast as it offers a lot of flexibility for you to experiment with and find something that suits your tastes. It’s also not that sensitive as you can add whatever you’d like in it, whether that be milk or syrup, the choice is up to you.

Roast date

As with anything good in life, it is important that you buy a bag of beans fresh so that you can get the best flavor possible as the flavor usually erodes over time. Like all types of coffee, espresso is better when fresh, the recommended time of buying is usually 1 week after the roast so that you get the best flavor possible.

Our espresso selections are mostly from Amazon, however, due to their popularity and quality, you’ll get the most freshly made batch as soon as place the order.

I hope you’ve enjoyed our guide so that you can the best coffee every time.
