Moccamaster vs. Bonavita: Drip Coffee Machine Brands Comparison

crazy by Editorial Staff | Updated on October 16th, 2021

Suppose like most coffee lovers, you choose drip coffee over many other forms of coffee. In that case, you’re going to need a decent drip coffee machine, and when you shop for one, you’re going to have to pick between Moccamaster and Bonavita.

There is no question that the two are the most successful drip coffee makers globally, and they are both known for producing some high-performing and top-quality coffee makers. And while you’d always be okay regardless of what you chose between them, it’s important to realize how far they are from making educated choices.

Moccamaster vs. bonavita

Technivorm’s Moccamaster is the older of the two labels. It had dominated the market for decades until the arrival of Bonavita. In addition to selling high-quality goods, drip coffee makers have now come into the market at a more affordable price tag.

But the two brands are much more distinct than the price tags, and in this piece, we offer in-depth analysis to help prospective consumers select between the two.

Moccamaster vs. bonavita

A few years back, Moccamaster was a go-to product for anybody looking for a top-quality drip coffee maker, but Bonavita’s coming changed things, and now it’s no longer the only decent choice.

However, a massive chunk of coffee lovers already swear by their old Moccamaster and don’t even want to try anything new. But for those who are only buying their first coffee maker or have tested both Moccamaster and Bonavita, the option is not always that simple.

The best way to make the selection simpler or at least more educated is to know what each brand has to give, and its origin is a good place to start.

Overview and origin

Over the past few years, most of the drip coffee makers sold on the market have been either Moccamaster or Bonavita, provided that the two brands hold a large market share. Despite their success across the globe, these brands have diverse origins and come from different parts of the world.

Moccamaster

Moccamaster

Moccamaster is the oldest of the two labels, as it has been in business for around half a century since it began operating in 1969.

This line of coffee makers is manufactured in the Netherlands by the Dutch company Technivorm, and they are top-of-the-line coffee makers designed to offer lifetime service. They are also considered the best of their class, and while the business prizes consistency above all else, it has only six models on the market, despite having been around for quite a while.

And for coffee drinkers who are mindful of their environmental effects, you’ll be glad to hear that Technivorm can only use biodegradable and recyclable materials when manufacturing their coffee makers.

The only lapse with the Moccamaster coffee makers, and maybe what many coffee lovers worry about is the strong price tag. They’re some of the most expensive drip coffee machines on the market.

Bonavita

Bonavita drip coffee makers have been developed in Germany but are manufactured in China. The corporation is also American, and besides coffee makers, it is also well known for a wide range of other devices and products.

Bonavita is fondly called the “Technivorm killer” since it sells similarly decent coffee makers at about half the price. But contrary to Moccamaster, they do not seem to highlight the components used to design their coffee makers because they appear to be all plastic.

One of their coffee makers’ key selling points is the pre-infusion feature, which means that the coffee grounds will bloom before extraction for a better taste of coffee. These coffee makers would also have U-shaped filter baskets and a wider showerhead for optimum coffee grounds’ optimum saturation.

Build quality and materials

Build quality and materials used to produce Moccamaster coffee makers set it apart from Bonavita. Several other brands are why many consumers still purchase it, and because of the high price tag.

Moccamaster coffee makers are designed to last a lifetime. They are assembled using Dutch technologies and under stringent quality standards, using high-quality materials such as aluminum for body and copper heating coils and few to no plastic parts.

On the other hand, Bonavita designs its goods in Germany, but produces it in China, so that it looks comparatively cheaper and with more plastic components. Yet because of their smaller price tag, they’re very strong, which is more so than other models besides Moccamaster.

Showerheads

The showerhead performs a key role in coffee making, so you can never hesitate to pick a coffee machine. Both Moccamaster and Bonavita have some great spray heads powerful enough to ensure optimum coffee saturation but are built differently.

With Moccamaster, the spray head is still a robust and durable metal that you can push around a surface manually to ensure that you get the required saturation. This could be a turn-off for some consumers who do not like interfering in the coffee-making process.

For Bonavita, the showerhead is an automated one, so you only have to set it up and leave it to do it for you, and it sprays the coffee pretty uniformly, which means it’s going to take the time better. So for the showerhead, Bonavita appears to have an advantage over Moccamaster.

Brew basket

Moccamaster has made up for its showerhead limitations with a more compact brewing basket. Its brew basket has an open arrangement at the top that helps you to get in and stir the grounds if you want to. The brew basket has a special mechanical lever that restricts the flow from below, and you can either open it entirely, open it halfway or shut it completely.

Unlike what you have on the Moccamaster coffee makers, Bonavita will have a sealed top brew basket, ensuring that you won’t have access to your coffee grounds while you’re brewing. However, since the showerhead is built to maintain complete and even saturation, you won’t even need it.

Thermal carafe

You can’t make a drip coffee without a carafe, so you need a cup of coffee. And even though you can still swap a carafe with one finer if it suits you, it’s an additional expense, so you’re going to want a coffee machine that comes with a decent carafe to save you the trouble.

Both coffee makers come with a 1.25-liter thermal carafe, but they’re built differently. Bonavita’s thermal carafe is glass-lined and has a tight-fitting lid, ensuring that it can keep the temperature very well. The most noticeable downside is that you need to lift the cap to position the cone filter basket while brewing, which is additional stress.

With Moccamaster, the thermal carafe is mostly not lined with glass and keeps the temperature well; it’s still super easy to pour since you don’t need to press any buttons.

Warranty and durability

While both Bonavita and Moccamaster can last a good number of years provided they are maintained properly, for the sake of comparison, the latter will last even longer, considering the better quality of construction and top-notch materials.

If you chose between the two brands that use durability as the sole consideration, Technivorm’s Moccamaster would be the better option. The coffee makers will not fail you any time soon and will almost ever crack so that you can have one for a lifetime.

Guarantees are also a clear indicator of consistency, as Moccamaster coffee makers would have a 5-year warranty, while Bonavita has a 2-year warranty for their products.

Price

For anyone buying on a budget, the Moccamaster isn’t going to do you much good as the top brand of the two, with much of the product retailing almost twice as much as you would pay for a Bonavita coffee maker.

And while the exact pricing will depend on the coffee maker model you’re purchasing, Moccamaster’s coffee maker prices start at about $300, while for Bonavita, you’ll pay at least $150. Still, most of their coffee makers don’t sell higher than $230.

Which one is better?

There is no straightforward response for which brand between Bonavita and Moccamaster will be best for you, as this would rely on different factors, such as what you are looking for and your budget.

But when it comes to build quality and durability, Moccamaster coffee makers are your perfect candidate. Besides high-performance, they are also extremely reliable and have a longer life than most drip coffee makers out there.

However, if you’re not able to spend a lot of cash on your drip coffee maker and want one with a sleeker look and features, Bonavita will fit well for you. And the positive thing about Bonavita is that considering the reduced price tag, it still makes a great Java cup.
