Malaysian Ipoh White Coffee

In most parts of the world, white coffee simply refers to the addition of milk to an ordinary coffee-based beverage produced from roasted coffee beans. In Malaysia, however, if you ask for white coffee, you will be offered something very different.

What is Malaysian Ipoh White Coffee?

The white coffee considered in this review refers to a beverage which originates from the city of Ipoh in Perak, Malaysia. Ordinarily Malaysian back coffee is roasted with the addition of sugar, margarine and wheat.

On the other hand, in the production of Ipoh white coffee the beans are roasted solely with the addition of palm oil margarine. The result is a roasted coffee bean, with a lighter color than the standard roast, with the addition of sugar.

After the coffee has been roasted with the distinctive addition of palm oil margarine, it is brewed in the traditional manner.

That is, the beans are ground and then added to boiling water as normal. Once prepared, the drink is generally served with condensed milk rather than fresh milk, as is customary in many regions of the world.

As a result, the coffee tastes quite different from a typical white coffee made using standard roasting processes and served with fresh milk.

Overall, Ipoh white coffee has a significantly sweeter flavor than its normal counterpart. The unique beverage lacks the traditional bitter/acidic taste of coffee beans roasted in the traditional manner.

Ipoh White Coffee Today

Today, Ipoh white coffee is typically offered after dinner or as a stand-alone evening drink. During the day, the beverage is rarely consumed.

Whilst the drink is native to the city of Ipoh, Ipoh white coffee is now widely consumed both in Malaysia and other parts of Asia, most notably in China. Despite the drinks popularity, the beverage is rarely available in the West, with the exception of visiting specialist Asian food stores.

The popularity of the drink has lead to Ipoh white coffee becoming available in an instant form. Notable producers include “Old Town White Coffee” and “Chang Jlang Coffee”. As with most instant drinks, the instant version is a poor substitute for the authentic experience.

When in Malaysia, it is worth paying a visit to one of the cafés that specialize in beverages. This firm, well known for its “Old Town” brand, has various sites around Malaysia.

However, the original Ipoh branch is still open for business. The franchise serves not only a broad variety of beverages, but also a comprehensive menu of Malaysian and Western cuisine.
