The Keurig K50 coffee maker

This practical and user-friendly brewer was the first of the two models to be released. It is compatible with multiple k-cups, gives you three different brew sizes to pick from (6, 8, or 10 ounces), and features a traditional button controls that make it easier to operate it.

It also includes a 48 oz water, which is large enough to allow you to brew without having to refill. The handy strong brew option further makes this unit ideal for all those who want their java to have a bold taste.

It shuts itself down after 30 minutes, so you don’t have to worry about your bills ballooning. However, it worth noting that this model is now discontinued, but they’re still a few units still available in the market.

Pros

  • The auto-off feature kicks in after 90 seconds
  • Relatively versatile for such a small machine
  • Simple and user-friendly button controls

Cons

  • A bit noisy when brewing
  • Some machines have short lifespans
  • Coffee has a noticeable plastic aftertaste

Commonly known as Keurig K-Classic, K55 has now replaced the K50. Although it was meant to be a separate model, today it is regarded as the upgraded version of the K50.

It offers the same cup sizes and a 48 reservoir as the K50, has a smoother design that combines retro and modern elements, and is compatible with the Keurig’s charcoal water filter. Additionally, it has an indicator that flashes when there isn’t enough water in the reservoir.

Additionally, it has a built-in auto shut-off feature that turns it off two hours after the last brew. Simply, it is much better than K50.

Pros

  • More reliable than the K50
  • One of Keurig’s popular coffee maker
  • Additional flashing lights help keep up with maintenance
  • Brewing takes less than a minute
  • Durable

Cons

  • The brewing process is noisier than the previous model
  • No control over coffee strength (makes for weak brews)

Is there a difference between these two models?

Yes, there exist some differences.

Speed

While both machines brew a cup of coffee under a minute, the K50 usually takes an extra 30 seconds. K55 is simply the winner. In under a minute, your brew will be ready.

Cleaning

Keurig brewers are generally easy to clean, and these two models don’t disappoint. Both have a removable drip tray, K-cup holder, and water reservoir. However, the K55 goes the extra mile by including a handy maintenance (descaling) reminder.

Custom brewing features

Both units offer three brew sizes that are compatible with various K-cups on the market. However, the K50 has an additional feature, the strong brew option that gets you a stronger and bolder java.

Bonus! None of these models is ideal for preparing espresso, lattes, or cappuccinos. So, keep that in mind when making your choice.

Reliability

A coffee machine’s ability to make good coffee is one key thing coffee lovers take seriously when shopping. Although the Keurig products do a decent job, they aren’t designed to serve you for long. This is because they are made of plastic parts, meaning they will wear out fast.

The K50 and K55 are no exception. They won’t be there to make you great coffee for long, but the K55 by far much better.

Control

Both have 5 control buttons. One to control auto-off, one power button, and 3 for sizes. Not to mention the four indicator lights: auto-off, descale, add water, and heating.

Water filter

When it comes to water filters, you are better off with the K55 because it is compatible with the mesh filter and Keurig’s charcoal filters. The K50 only relies on a mesh filter; hence very unlikely to enjoy smoother and better-tasting coffee with it.

Taste

When it comes to taste, we found the K55 to be more appealing. It does brew relatively stronger coffee than K50. We encourage you to experiment with both machines and let’s know which gets you better coffee.

Aesthetics

Unlike other Keurig coffee machines which are available in different colors, these two models are only available in black. However, when it comes to design, we like the K55 for its smoother corners that make it look more compact. Have a different view? Let’s know!

Usability

Keurig had coffee lovers in mind when they designed these easy to use machines. They are easy to use – you just hit a button, and your brew is ready in no time. And unlike other models that have more controls, these two have a user-friendly interface that eliminates the need to fiddle with settings. Besides, it is easy to prepare your java with them. To brew with either, do the following:

  • Plug your unit into a power source,
  • Add water into the reservoir
  • Insert the pod into the K-Cup holder,
  • Hit the power button. It will warm water in about 4 minutes, and a light will indicate when it is ready to start brewing.
  • Place a right-sized cup onto the Drip Tray Plate and specify quantity using the brew buttons.
  • Your cup of coffee will be brewed in 1 to 1.5 minutes.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Don’t forget these units also feature an auto-off button that allows you to conserve energy. However, the K55 has an added feature: The Quite Brew Tech that reduces the noise produced by the machine.
