An eggnog latte is a special treat during the holiday season. Learn how to make this Starbucks-inspired drink at home with or without an espresso machine.

Starbucks made the eggnog latte a holiday favorite among coffee lovers, but this tasty drink can be easily made at home with or without an espresso machine. All you need are a few simple ingredients to make this coffee-house treat a holiday tradition in your own home.

Make an Eggnog Latte at Home

This recipe calls for a home espresso machine but can be easily adapted if you do not have one. Technically, a latte is made with espresso shots. If you don’t have a home espresso machine, feel free to substitute strong black coffee. The concentrated coffee packs like Starbucks’ VIA work well.

Eggnog Latte Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 shots espresso (or 1/2 cup strong coffee)
  • 2/3 cup eggnog
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Nutmeg (optional)

Step 1: Pour the milk and eggnog into a steaming pitcher.

Use the steaming wand of your espresso to steam the mixture to the desired temperature. Steaming is preferred because it allows the milk mixture to heat quickly without cooking the eggs in the eggnog. If you don’t have a milk steamer, microwave the mixture for up to 90 seconds, checking at regular intervals to ensure the eggs haven’t started cooking.

Step 2: Add Espresso or Coffee

Next, pour the espresso or coffee into a large mug and add the milk mixture. Top with whipped cream and nutmeg. If your espresso machine has a steam wand, you can substitute foamed milk for whipped cream.

To make foamed milk, pour plain milk into your steaming pitcher. Steam to about 130 degrees, then slowly move the wand to just below the surface of the milk. Move the wand around in the steam pitcher to create foam.

Recipe Variations

This versatile eggnog latte recipe can be adapted in several ways. To make a vegan version, substitute 1 cup of steamed or warmed soy ‘nog’ for the soymilk for the eggnog and milk. Since the soy version is not made with egg, combining it with soymilk is unnecessary unless you find the flavor a bit strong.

For an adult treat, add a shot of rum to your latte (regular or vegan) and top with whipped cream and nutmeg. This makes a unique and delicious drink alternative at holiday parties.

An Eggnog latte is a fun, frugal, festive holiday treat. Enjoy one anytime – before a day of holiday shopping or after a day.
