Best-selling Gooseneck Kettles

Pour-over brewing is best done using gooseneck kettles. They are specifically designed for easier flow rate control and come in both stovetop and electric variants, adding to their versatility and convenience.

We’ve narrowed down our top choices from both variants together with a simple guide on how to pick the right one and tips on how to make the most out of your gooseneck kettle.

Hario Buono Gooseneck Coffee Kettle

The Hario Buono Gooseneck Kettle is best paired with V60 pour-over drippers. Professional baristas often use them because the shape of their spout and the handle’s design is optimal for controlling the flow of the water being poured.

The kettle’s lid automatically locks during heating which helps in maintaining water temperature and preventing spills and leakages.

Design

Pour-over coffee had become part of menus for many years now when specialty coffee companies like Intelligentsia initiated it. When that began, the Hario V60 Buono became in demand. It is probably one of the very first gooseneck kettles that became popular.

At first glance, the beehive shape is appealing to the eyes. The body made of flawless stainless steel remains durable even after hours of usage. The lid has a black plastic knob for a handle, and the gooseneck spout emerges elegantly from the bottom part of the kettle.

The crooked shape of the handle grip makes it less prone to slipping from the user’s hands. The overall look of the Hario Buono makes it a strong contender as a visually good kettle.

Usability

The Buono lacks the edge when it comes to this aspect because of its thin metal body and angle of the gooseneck spout. The angle and shape of the gooseneck matter a lot in pour-overs.

The best-brewed coffee follows the waterfall theory provided by Bonavita and Fellow Stagg (see more below). In the waterfall theory, the water falls from the gooseneck opening to the receiving brewer almost at a 90-degree angle.

Another theory about water flow is referred to as direct injection, in which the gooseneck is designed to have water flow directly down to the coffee grounds.

Introducing the Gooseneck Kettle

The name of the kettle was derived from the shape of its spout. Stemming from the bottom part of the kettle’s base, the spout emerges from the bottom and curves upward to finally form the angled tip. Why is this so? It controls the flow of the liquid since the spout’s shape slows down the outpour compared to the regular kettles.

Gooseneck kettles are also made this way to provide comfort for the user, especially for pour-over drinks, which require continuous pouring, usually for 2-3 minutes nonstop.

Benefits of having a Gooseneck Kettle

You can pour evenly and carefully.

When it comes to pour-over brewing, stirring is not an option. Unlike French presses or Aeropress, where you can apply some agitation to the coffee grounds to even out the concentration, the richness of pour-over drinks depends solely on how the barista pours.

The thin and slender spout of gooseneck kettles reduces the volume of the water that flows out and gives you more freedom to control the pace and direction of the flow. You can pour evenly on the coffee grounds to get that rich flavor.

Water temperature is easier to regulate and monitor

There are built-in thermometers on most gooseneck kettles so you can set and see the temperature of the water. Other kettles let you set an exact temperature and retain that for a specific period, so it gives a consistent result.

Prevents splashes and spills

One of the many purposes of the gooseneck kettle’s shape and form is the lesser risk of splashes and spills. Together with a solid, secured lid, it is less likely for the water to spill out, and the temperature can be maintained for a significant amount of time. This also adds to the safety and comfort when pouring. You do not need to worry about small puddles forming on the counter.

Choosing the Right Gooseneck Kettle

Stovetop vs. Electric

Gooseneck kettles have two variants: stovetop and electric. This can be the first decision you make before anything else. Stovetop kettles are generally smaller in size with much simpler designs, and they cost less.

On the other hand, the electric ones are bigger. Therefore, they could take up a considerable amount of space on the counter. They also have more features and are more expensive.

Size

You must consider your typical day-to-day usage when choosing the right kettle size. If you’re just usually preparing coffee for yourself, then perhaps a small-sized one is for you.

However, if you frequently have a lot of people over who drink coffee, you may have to opt for a larger one with a bigger capacity so you can accommodate multiple people at once. There is a wide range of sizes for gooseneck kettles. You can easily select one that will fit your needs.

Cleaning

It is still possible to have residue accumulate inside the kettle regardless if you’re only boiling water in it. There are kettles with wide openings that allow you to reach in with your hand and clean the insides, while the ones with smaller openings will need brushes to be cleaned thoroughly. Kettles made with stainless steel tend to rust over time without proper maintenance.

Convenience

There are gooseneck kettles designed for the comfort of the user. Its handle is secured and slip-free to ensure safety when holding and pouring. Some kettles are designed for maximum efficiency when used in a working environment. Remember to keep a safe distance from the kettle when pouring hot water. Don’t be fooled by fancy handles that are not designed for safety.

Flow Rate

Gooseneck kettles can either pour slowly or quickly. But the best kettle is one that pours evenly. Controlling the pace of the flow is an important factor in brewing. The best kettle you can own is one which allows you to do so since it takes practice to be able to pour evenly.

Material and Design

The quality of the material is an important factor to consider in choosing your kettle. High-quality kettles are usually made of stainless steel and aluminum. Kettle manufacturers are always coming up with innovations to reduce the tendency of rusting for these materials.

Some materials, like plastic and cheap metals, are easier to clean and maintain, but these are more prone to rusting and breakage. Most gooseneck kettles look pretty much the same, but sometimes they differ in some design aspects. It’s not bad to have a kettle with a sleek design on your countertop.

A Beginner’s Guide to Using a Gooseneck Kettle

Pour-over coffee brewing with a gooseneck kettle is determined by two factors: the pour and the fine grind. The finer the particle size, the better the flavor result will be achieved because it will allow the water to seep through the coffee grounds compared to coarse particles.

How to use a gooseneck kettle:

  1. As a beginner, you can test your pouring skills with just 100 grams of regular water through an empty dripper for 10 seconds to get an idea of the flow rate of the kettle.
  2. Position your body correctly. Keep your elbows close, your arm and shoulder in. This gives you the freedom to shift the weight of the kettle so you can pour it evenly over the coffee particles. You can brew nicely, and it’s comfortable for you as well. Keeping your body relaxed and your posture upright is the right technique to pour from a gooseneck kettle properly.
  3. Distance is also key. The spout must be 8-10 inches higher from the coffee grounds. Any higher could disrupt the distribution of the coffee particles, and any lower can risk damaging the dripper. Pouring from a consistent height also makes for better brewing.
  4. While there is no standard in direction, the Ueshima Coffee Co. Academy in Japan recommends pouring in a clockwise direction.
  5. Be mindful of the amount of water left in the kettle when you pour.
  6. Be consistent with your technique. Even if all elements are the same, when your pouring technique changes, it will affect the result of the flavor.
  7. You can also lean on something for support with your free hand to keep your balance.

Gooseneck Kettles for Other Manual Brewing Methods

Aeropress, French Press, and other brewers do not need to be done with a gooseneck kettle, but it sure does help, especially for brewing methods that don’t heat the water first.

Immersion Brewing

A common example of this brewing method is the French press. This does not require precision when pouring water, and the coffee grounds are also constantly stirred, so the pouring speed does not matter much. However, using gooseneck kettles for the French press can be an advantage in terms of temperature control.

Some have temperature control and retention functions that allow you to set and maintain a specific temperature for the water. Even stovetop kettles can allow you to do that with the thermometer gauge. You can remove the kettle from the heat source when it reaches around 195-205F range.

Aside from coffee, tea is also best prepared with manual brewing. A temperature above 185F ruins the natural flavor of most tea types. Tea lovers know that the right temperature makes for the perfect cup of tea.

Aeropress with Gooseneck Kettles

Just like the French press, temperature control is also important for brewing using Aeropress. It also helps that the flow pace is controlled because of the limited space to pour into, so using a regular kettle might cause it to overflow.

This also applies to manual espresso machines and Vietnamese coffee makers. Regardless of the heating method for the water, the flavor does not change. However, using a gooseneck kettle is much safer and more comfortable.

How to Clean Gooseneck Kettles

One of the great things about gooseneck kettles is that they do not require much maintenance. Provided that you do not leave any excess water inside when it’s not in use, they usually last for several months, even without regular cleaning.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that after some time, some residue from hard water can accumulate on the insides of the kettle. It’s a white solid with an almost chalk-like texture. But this can be remedied with vinegar.

  1. Make a mixture of vinegar and water in equal proportions and fill the kettle halfway through.
  2. Bring it to a boil and just allow it to sit for half an hour.
  3. Discard the mixture and wash the inside of the kettle with clean water.
  4. Use a soft, moist cloth to wipe the inside of the kettle to clean out any residue left thoroughly, get rid of any vinegar, and then allow it to dry. It is also recommended to do a cleansing boil before using it again for brewing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it okay to use a regular kettle to prepare pour-over coffee?

Yes. But there are some downsides to it. You won’t be able to experience the advantages of using a gooseneck kettle. Controlling your pouring speed will be difficult, and so your coffee will not be in its best taste.

Is the kettle’s base responsible for maintaining the water temperature?

It varies from one brand to another. There are some brands of gooseneck kettles with temperature retention function, but there are also some brands that don’t have it.

How long can water be stored in the kettle?

You should not leave unused water inside the kettle for a long time to avoid having limescale buildup. Replace it with new water after a couple of hours.

When is a good time to replace your gooseneck kettle?

Every item we included in the list above comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. However, there is still a tendency for it to deteriorate after a few years, especially when it is constantly being used. You know you need a new kettle if it does not switch on, or some part of it is faulty or damaged, or when it’s taking longer than usual to heat water.

Should I invest in an expensive kettle, or would a cheap one suffice?

There are budget-friendly kettles that have similar features to the quite pricey ones. But you should not focus on the price. Instead, you should look at the quality and durability of the kettle and if it has a lot of features for its price. It also depends on your needs and your convenience.
